The culture here is in most ways much more stolid and constrained that at any other place I’ve worked at. The dress code is strict, the hours you can work are tightly controlled, etc. Maybe it’s the lack of other outlets, but one thing that’s curious here are how it seems like every day there is some excuse to have a pot-luck pile of food at somebody’s cubicle. Usually it’s a birthday, today it’s some student finishing his work-term and going back to school. It’s very odd. And fattening.

Oddly, you sound less distressed about this facet of this new job than you’ve been lately.
I suspect it has a lot to do with which group you’re in. Back in the mid 90’s when I worked there, the group I was in ( PC apps ) was far less constrained than the guys upstairs who developed apps for the Prime. There were still things that annoyed me, like not being able to leave the cube without a jacket on, but the rules about stuff like having a clean desk, just one picture frame in the cube, no plants, etc. were pretty roundly ignored.
Are you still required to leave all window blinds at the “Paychex Slant”? ( I.E., slats level ).
Oh, and at that point in time, the company cafeteria had the best food of any place I’ve worked, before or since. Well, except for the IBM plant in Guadalajara where we had waiters with white gloves and turtle soup for lunch.
There’s no customers in our area, so we’re allowed to dress “Relaxed Professional” and leave stuff on our desks. And I wouldn’t know about the blinds, since I’m not authorized to operate them. And I’m also no-where near the cafeteria. Good thing, I hate the taste of white gloves.
