With a mark-down like this, how can you NOT afford it?

Screen grab from a Garmin GPS dealer.

The price has been marked down from $799.99 to $799.00. Well, I couldn’t afford it before, but now…

(Note: This is not a hint. This is the not the GPS I want anybody buying me for Christmas. If I were in the market for a new GPS, it would be the Garmin 296. Thank you.)

  1. And, my darling one, Light of my Life, at $1695 (yes, those digits are all to the left of the decimal point), I’m afraid it will remain a hint for a while longer.

But I love you, a lot.

  2. Paul, I gotta tell ya, I’ve had a 196 for a couple of flights now, and I love it. You *sure* you need the color? I traded in my 295 for the 196 and I consider it an UPgrade with its faster processor, higher resolution, more features and great battery life (for messing with it at home on the couch). I realize the 296 has all that and more, I’m just saying you get some of the major features of the x96 series for a lot less $$ with the 196.

  3. Vicki, you’ll note that I said “If I were in the market”. I’m not.

Rob, I always thought the 295 was a piece of junk – lower res than the 195 that it was supposedly replacing, terrible battery life, processor too slow for what it was trying to do. I thought the 196 was da’ bomb until the 296 came out, but that terrain display is just *so* good. Personally, I think somebody should come out with a way of displaying uplink weather and ADS/B information and approach plates on it, and you’d have a really great EFB.
