  1. Whoa, the equipment sure has changed since I learned to paddle in the 60s!

My dad was posted as Military Attache to the US Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. Since it was the height of the Cold War, we were followed by the Secret Police everywhere. Once we went on a family camping vacation in Mazuria, a beautiful region of Poland with many lakes. The Secret Police sent a pair of agents to keep an eye on us. The older guy was pretty standoffish, but the younger guy was all “Hey, he’s just a kid!” and taught me how to paddle his kayak.

That’s right — I learned to paddle from the Polish Secret Police!

Glad to see you having fun — and success — with it.
