Good bye, Concorde

Final Concorde Flight Lands at Heathrow (washingtonpost.com)

The most beautiful airliner ever built has passed into history. We will not see its like ever again. Sigh. With it goes the last vestige of the era where people though we could do anything, from fly to the moon to solve world hunger.

Actually, I thought the Lockheed Constellation
was a prettier plane than the Concorde — it had
the same voluptuous 1950 look as my old XK120.

The Concorde was impressive, but wrong. Practical
airliners have gotten no faster since the 707,
and won’t until they change the laws of physics.
Boeing even dropped their plan to eke out an extra
tenth of a Mach and continue to build 450-knot
    trucks.

And world hunger is a most soluble problem; it’s
just less fashionable than blowing up Arabs.

  2. Paul Tomblin Says:

Lots of people say that the Connie is a prettier plane than Concorde. Those people are WRONG.

  3. Phil Gustafson Says:

You probably don’t like Bellancas, either.

  4. Paul Tomblin Says:

Well, I don’t like the Bellanca Viking much. Nice looking, but there have been some hideously expensive ADs on it recently.
