Yesterday, the team was supposed to do a 5 mile workout – either on the bay or up the creek. But the weather utterly sucked – the temp was barely above freezing, and there was wet snow in the air. No thanks.
Today was 10 to 15 degrees warmer and sunny. Much better. I decided to try to do yesterday’s workout today. I set off into the bay, and was doing relatively well until after I passed the point I refer to as “One Mile Point”. This was my first time paddling with the Garmin Forerunner 301, so I was able to confirm that “One Mile Point” is *exactly* 1 mile from the dock at BayCreek. I also got a reminder that the bay is gets choppier once you get north of that point, as I also discovered last year. I was getting hit by two wakes, one from in front and one from the right, and a reflection of an earlier wake from the shore on the left, when I decided that I’m not ready to deal with this sort of thing when I’m alone, the water is cold, and I’m not all that familiar with this boat. So when the GPS said I’d gone exactly 1.5 miles, I turned around. Then when I got back to the dock and the GPS hit exactly 3.0 miles, I went upstream another 1.0 miles and came back, meaning I paddled just a tiny hair over 5.0 miles.
The Forerunner is awesome. I plugged it into my computer when I got home, and got all this nifty information out of it.
And here it is as a Google Map:
I also had my Flip camera along recording the first 30 minutes or so. I was trying to do a video log of the workout, talking to the camera, but you can barely make out what I’m saying so it’s hardly worth listening to. But my technique looks pretty good, which is always worth confirming.
