Check out http://www.nutshell.co.nz/ for a decent case. I'm using one for my Palm Tungsten E and it provides an excellent blend of storage/comfort/protection. They're very oriented to USA sales despite the New Zealand location. You'll get one customized to your requirements.

You might also want to wait until next year, when they may actually come out with a 3G iphone. 3G was finally turned on in Rochester/Syracuse/Buffalo/Albany last week, and it's *so* much nicer than EDGE service. If nothing else, the 3G voice codec is far better sounding than the one for GSM/EDGE.

The latest firmware has an option to disable data when you don't want to use it, or you can just manually insert a dummy APN to accomplish the same thing.

As well, AT&T has a "roaming" plan now for Canada (and a few other select areas) for a reasonable fee that includes some roaming data - more then enough for most people.

Of course, for extended stays outside of your home area, simply unlocking and using a local SIM beats most options.

the iphone is on Cingular's GSM/GPRS network. given GPRS is ppp over GSM it would be quite easy to turn off data connections while still allowing it to be used as a phone service.
(my hTC8525 has just such a function)

One thing you might want to think about, Paul, is what happens when you leave the US. From what I've read, the device is always chattering away, even when it's turned off. You might find this an expensive "feature" when you travel outside the US.

At least with my new Crackberry Curve, I can turn off the data services functions when roaming so that it's effectively a normal mobile phone. Unless they've modified the iPhone, you can't do this.

And FWIW, you can thank my typos above on my iPhone.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not sold on the keyboard.

Allot of what you mentioned was (and still is) a topic of frequent frustration for me with my iPhone.

The lack of copy/paste is frustrating, and the inability to select large swaths of text and delete sucks as well. Like yourself I like to quote bits of text on forums/emails, and the iPhone makes it painfully. When it comes to emails I've simply gave up and have become a bottom quoter.

I dont think you'll find the email handling that bad - I have a few messy IMAP accounts and it indexed them just fine. Why not go to the Apple store and set them up temporailly on a demo unit? There's no restrictions on the demo units that would prevent it, just delete them after the fact.

As for durability, well, I've dropped mine at least 5 times and its holding up fine. I bought a nice slick clear "Countour" case that includes a holster it clips into on your belt. When removed its usable just fine yet still offers allot of protection, but when holstered its well protected against scrapes and scratches.

Yes, it detracts from it's looks a bit but it beats the alternative in my case, and its really not that bad since its clear.

The web browser kicks ass but I find some pages can slow it to a painfull crawl if you need to input text, which leads me to my last gripe - the keyboard. Yeah, I'm still not sold on it, and prefered the tactile keyboard on my last device - I could type twice as fast and with with much better accuracy. Fine for someone who only sends the occasional email or needs text input infrequently, but maddening for forum junkies like me.

The camera is good, the lense stays moderately clean (a quick wipe on my shirt fixes it if not) and I actually find myself using it more often now that it doesn't suck like the one on my last device.

"So there you have it - do I buy an iPhone or not?"

Um, what ever happened to
"It's SHINY!"?

I can help with one of those: The iPhone camera lens is recessed, and mine's never gotten dirty in my pocket.

I just checked, and mine doesn't seem to index IMAP folders that aren't the inbox by default. It's hard to tell, because I'm using gmail's IMAP, but it looks like the first time you look at a folder, it updates it, then it keeps it updated when you check mail. If you drop me an email, I'll look into it more when I'm not in a meeting.
