On my first solo cross country, the tower asked if I was familiar with the area, and I said no, and he then said "report over the community college". A minute later I saw some buildings that looked sort of instititional, so I reported "over some institutional buildings", and he cleared me to land. My first cross-country as a fully-license PPL was to Buttonville and I was asked to call up when over the cathedral. Never having been there before, I almost asked "uh, what?" but then I saw the very conspicuous building. :) Sort of like calling up over the watertower in Ottawa when approaching the north field from the northeast -- before they tore the watertower down, that is. “over the cathedral” and sure enough there was a very odd looking cathedral-like building in the middle of no-where.
