The way how I'm teaching my students is not to look primarily at the NAV aids. For me there is no big difference between a precision and non precision APP. First of all focus the attitude indicator, second the heading bug on the gyro, third establish a constant ROD (with the attitude indicator). Thats almost everyting you need for a precision APP.
