Just fucking stop it, ok?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Ok, God, we’ve got it. Life is temporary and your friends and loved ones and friends of loved ones can be called away at any time. I’ve got it already. Just fucking stop. Now. Deb, Julie, Ron, Randy, Bob, all gone, and others besides. That’s enough. Whether it’s cancer, terrorists or plane crashes, it still hurts. Every single day.

So now Maddy has cancer. Just stop.

Still working on it

Monday, September 29th, 2003

I’m still working on the flying club web machine. I’ve put together a main page for them to look at. Basically I think the machine is functional as it is, but I want more.

Opus

Monday, September 29th, 2003

We went to see “Secondhand Lions” at the theatre this weekend. The movie starts in a cartoonist’s studio, and the first thing that lept out at me was that the Berk Breathed drew the cartoons. It was so incredibly obvious that we had to go home and check IMDB to make sure. (No, that doesn’t make sense to me, either, except that it’s nice to be right once in a while.)

A few days ago, I’d read this story (and others of course) about how Berkeley Breathed is bringing back Opus.

I have to wonder if he didn’t enjoy making those cartoons for the movie that he decided he missed it enough to want to get back into the business. If so, it’s another thing to love about this movie. And there was a lot to love about it, no matter how annoying you find Haley Joel Osment. A lot of people hated the ending, but I didn’t. Maybe I’m a sucker for closure, but I liked having that extra proof.

Getting this thing to work

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

I’m setting up a computer for the flying club’s ops room. Basically I want this to be a “web kiosk”, as idiot proof as possible, because let’s face it, when it comes to computers, some pilots are complete idiots.

Fucking Spammers

Friday, September 26th, 2003

So I’ve had this blog for what, 3 days now? And already somebody posted a penis spam in the comments. So I had to remove the comment and ban the IP, which is a royal pain. All spammers must die. Painfully.

MovableType

Friday, September 26th, 2003

This web log software I’m using, MovableType appears to be extremely functional and customizable. One thing I’m thinking of doing is converting the “what’s new” portions of my CoPilot and my Rochester Flying Club web sites into blogs. Either the static content could be put in in the template, or maybe the blog portion could be embedded as a frame or an iframe. I’m obviously going to have to experiment some with this.

Another thing I’d like to do is learn a whole bunch more about style sheets, since I’ve seen some amazing stuff done with them.

Dammit

Friday, September 26th, 2003

My pain level is creeping up again. It interferred with my sleeping for much of the night last night. Damn I hate this.

You wanna know why people get viruses?

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

Do you want to know why people get viruses? I was visitng some people I’d set up an office network for a couple of years ago. I’d also connected them to the internet via cable modem. I stressed to them that since they’re on the big bad internet full time now, they’ve got to heed those Windows Critical Update notifications, and they should get anti-virus software as well.

How come…

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

How come all the anarchists use that same “A with a circle” logo? Did they have a big meeting and vote on it, or did the Grand Council of Supreme Anarchists just decree that they had to use it?

Still not convinced

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

I’m still not 100% convinced that I like this blog thing. I mean, it’s very cool and all to have a space that’s all your own where you can say whatever you like about anything you like, but it’s got some real disadvantages over email and Usenet from the producer and consumer side.

Fire Hall Visit

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

Last night our flying club had one of our membership meetings at the airport fire hall. Before the meeting, the commander gave us a tour of the facilities.

Oh my God!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

I’ve worked in so many soul destroying cube farms, and a couple of places where a bunch of developers where stuck in a big echo-ey room, that this place looks like nerd-vanna to me.
Joel on Software - Bionic Office

Actually, I worked one place with semi-private offices. It was great because I shared an office with another bird lover and we used to bring our birds in and let them fly around the room. But that place was soul destroying in so many other ways that it couldn’t make up for the nice offices.

Skiing Versus Flying

Wednesday, September 24th, 2003

This is another in my series of reposts from my original journal on Slashdot over to this new blog. With hopefully a bit of editing. This one involves the age old question, “Is flying as good as skiing”. Ok, it’s not an age-old question, but it’s one a friend of mine asked when I was reminiscing about skiing and feeling bad about how I can’t do it any more.

Bugs Rule

bugsrule_small.gif
This picture used to be an ad for a PC debugger. A while back, a friend of mine revealed he had it on a t-shirt. A much smaller friend. I begged him for the shirt, even though I couldn’t possibly wear it. I scanned it, and added a logo from the project I was working on at the time, and made it the unofficial logo of the bug fixers on that project. One of these days I’m going to get some of that iron-on transfer stuff and make it into a t-shirt.
